Abstract
1,054,019. Composite polyamide filaments. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. Sept. 24, 1965 [Oct. 1, 1964], No. 40788/65. Heading B5B. [Also in Division D1] A drawn, heat relaxed composite polyamide filament comprises two continuous, mutually adherent components disposed in side by side or eccentric sheath-core configuration, one component consisting of a homopolyamide and the other of a copolyamide, characterized in that (a) the copolyamide consists essentially of 8-18% or 57-78% of hexamethylene adipamide or sebacamide, together with epsiloncaproamide and (b) the homopolyamide has a lower shinkage potential than the copolyamide and is preferably selected from the group comprising polyhexamethylene adipamide, sebacamide and dodecanamide and polyepsiloncaproamide. The filament may be formed by melt extrusion, heat set, drawn, heat relaxed at a temperature above 140‹ C. causing it to crimp into helical form, and subsequently stretched an amount only sufficient to remove the crimp. The copolyamide may be the core of the composite filament, the latter having an eccentric sheath-core configuration. The filament may be exposed in a relaxed condition to steam at about 118‹ C. so as to cause the filament to crimp. This step may be effected after the filament has been incorporated into a fabric.
