Abstract

1,159,875. Crimped conjugate polyamide filaments. ASAHI KASEI KOGYO K.K. 7 March, 1967 [11 March, 1966], No. 10697/67. Heading B5B. Conjugate filaments having crimp potential are formed by simultaneously melt-spinning through the or each hole of a spinneret a homopolyamide and a terpolyamide obtained by copolymerizing # - caprolactam (6M), hexamethylenediammonium adipate (66 salt) and hexamethylenediammonium terephthalate (6T salt) and drawing the resultant filament or yarn. The homopolyamide may be poly-#- caprolactam or polyhexamethylene adipamide. The filaments may be cold-drawn, in which case they do not immediately become crimped when they are relaxed, or may be drawn at a temperature of 60‹ C. or above, in which case the filaments become crimped as soon as they are relaxed. The crimp may be greatly improved by subjecting the drawn filaments to heat treatment in a relaxed condition or under a load of about 0À5 mg./denier. The heat treatment may be effected at a temperature within the range 60‹ to 180‹ C. If hot water or steam is used as the heating medium, a temperature of 80‹ to 110‹ C. is preferable. If the melting point of the terpolyamide is not higher than 200‹ C., a spinning oil containing not more than 20% by weight of moisture is heated to 40‹ to 80‹ C. and is applied to the filaments before they are drawn to prevent the filaments from becoming stuck together on the winding bobbin. The composition of the terpolyamide may fall within the area in a diagram of triangular co-ordinates representing the composition of the copolymer defined by a polygon formed by connecting by straight lines five points corresponding to the molar ratios of 6M, 66 salt and 6T salt of 99À8 : 0À1 : 0À1, 0À1 : 99À8 : 0À1, 0À1 : 70 : 29À9, 20 : 40 : 40 and 60 : 0À1 : 39À9, respectively. By using terpolyamides whose composition falls within areas of specified polygons falling within the area of the main polygon defined above one or other desired properties of the filaments may be emphasized.
