Abstract

1,075,961. Multifilamentary polyamide tows. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 29, 1964 [Jan. 10, 1964], No. 1146/64. Heading B5B. In the manufacture of a tow suitable for stretch breaking, filaments are extruded from a polyamide having a relative viscosity (defined in the Specification) of 30 or less, the filaments are separated into at least two bundles each of which is subjected to a different level of tension in the squirrel cage of a draw-crimping machine, and the bundles are recombined and then are drawn and crimped according to known procedures to form a tow having a reduced tendency to snap breaking when processed on a stretch-breaking machine. The polyamide, for example polyhexamethylene adipamide, preferably has a relative viscosity of from 27 to 30. To obtain the different levels of tension, a different yarn path in the squirrel cage may be used for each bundle -of filaments. A tow consisting of filaments produced as above preferably has a snap-break rating (defined in the Specification) of less than 10 and exhibits stretching characteristics defined in the Specification with reference to a method described therein and as illustrated in the single graphical figure (not shown).
