When jaws 12, 14 of a grab used for clearing blocked refuse shoots abut the refuse as the grab is lowered the jaws move apart, thereby releasing pivoted locking levers 23 24 which engage pins 28 to hold the jaws open. Thus, when the grab is raised the pull on ropes 17, 18 closes the jaws on the blockage. A frame 3, 4 guides the grab in the refuse shoot and pulleys 19, 20 guide the ropes 17, 18. To reset the jaws of the grab in their open position a tool 32, Fig. 7 (not shown), is used to support the grab at one of the access points to the shoot. A tapered plunger 38 is pushed through a hole 27, Fig. 1, and forces the tails 26 of levers 23, 24 downwards so that the latter are swung outwards into locking engagement with the pins 28.
