Abstract
In a fluidized bed process for the gaseous reduction of iron ore the heat requirement is supplied by recirculating a part of the product through an external burner under such conditions that no re-oxidation of the metal occurs, while the reduction gases are obtained from the cracking of a hydrocarbon fuel, carbon being simultaneously deposited on the product of the reduction. In one embodiment the fuel is introduced into the final reduction zone, so that cracking and reduction to metal take place together; a part of the carbon-coated ore is recirculated through an external burner where it is heated by the combustion of waste gases from the Fe3O4 --> FeO reduction. The products of this combustion are then used to reduce Fe2O3 --> Fe3O4. In a second embodiment the fuel is introduced, together with oxygen-containing gas, into a bed of reduced metal particles, where cracking occurs. The gases are then used to reduce ore in separate reducing zones, while a part of the carbon-coated metal particles is sent to an external heater and there heated by partial combustion of the carbon. Suitable operating conditions are described, and forms of apparatus are indicated schematically. The produce may be melted in an electric furnace, the evolved gases being used to heat the recirculated fraction of product.
