Abstract

<PICT:0976934/C6-C7/1> A method for the direct reduction of powdered iron ore comprises a first stage in which the heated ore is reduced by gases in fluidized beds in cascade to FeO at a temperature of 900-1050 DEG C. and then cooled to 700 DEG C. and a second stage in which the FeO is reduced to iron by hydrogen in fluidized beds at 700 DEG C. As shown, the iron ore is reduced to FeO by gases from the incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons in a fluidized bed formed in cascades 3-6, a worm conveyer 7 moving the FeO from the lowermost bed 6 to a bed 18 where it is cooled to 700 DEG C. The cooled oxide is then supplied to a cascade 10-13 of fluidized beds and reduced to iron by hydrogen flowing in a controlled recycling circuit. The waste gas from bed 3 is divided into three portions, the first being used to cool the FeO to 700 DEG C., and then burned in a burner 18 to produce reducing gas, the second is reheated before being burned in the burner 18, and the third is burned to reheat the second portion, the gases being circulated by a fan 20.
