[Published under Section 91 of the Act.] Ore processes.-Iron oxides are reduced by introducing the ore unmixed with carbon into the upper end of an inclined rotary furnace, carbon monoxide being introduced at the lower end; air is introduced at an intermediate stage to burn the gases, and carbon is introduced at a lower stage to act on the oxide and on the gases; the product is discharged into an electric furnace. The gases introduced at the lower end of the furnace may be those produced in electric furnaces treating oxides with carbon. In a modification, the carbon monoxide is burnt as it enters the lower part of the furnace.
