Process of direct reduction of iron oxides to metallic iron, characterized in contacting said oxides with reducing gases, the reducing reaction being substantially endothermic requiring the addition of large quantities of heat, which process comprises the separation of a portion of the reduced iron, the circulation thereof to an external heating zone, the heating of the iron reduced to a high temperature, and the recirculation thereof to the reducing zone, thus adding heat to said reducing zone of the iron in sufficient quantities, to carry out the desired reduction reaction.
