Abstract

A process for forming a soft chromium plate on metals e.g. cast iron pistons, consists in applying a current density of 50 to 100 AS Dm. at 25 to 40 DEG C. An initial CD of up to 180 AS Dm may be applied for 30 secs. A bath containing CrO3 and H2SO4 is used and is free of alkali. The coating may be polished by brushing: a soft coating 15m thick is formed in a few minutes.
