Abstract

1,048,953. Ionization manometers. DEUTSCHE AKADEMIE DER WISSENSCHAFTEN ZU BERLIN. Feb. 2, 1965, No. 4498/65. Heading H1D. [Also in Division G1] The X-ray current of a manometer tube of the Bayard-Alpert type having two cathodes of which only one is heated is determined by connecting the unheated cathode to a switch enabling its potential and thus the sensitivity of the tube to be varied. The tube comprises an ion collector 1, grid 2 and two cathodes 3 and 4, cathode 3 being heated. An earthed layer 5 of tin-oxide covering the inner wall of the tube may be replaced by a metal sleeve. Switch 6 enables the cathode 4 to be connected to cathode 3, to earth, or to the grid 2. By taking two measurements of the ion current with different potentials on the cathode 4, the X-ray current, which remains constant, can be calculated. The prior use of an auxiliary " modulato " electrode for this purpose is referred to.
