Abstract

1,179,406. lonization counters. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 21 Feb., 1967 [28 Feb., 1966], No. 8766/66. Heading H1D. [Also in Division G1] An elongated gas-filled proportional counter type of radiation detector has elongated electrodes one of which is resistive whereby the point along the detector at which radiation impinges and causes ionization is determined by determining the proportions of charge, resulting from the ionization, which now to each end of the resistance electrode. The charged particles from ionization flow to the nearest point of both electrodes where they are neutralized by charge from an outside circuit, but for the resistance electrode the charge to or from it is divided between the two ends in proportions determined by the lengths of resistive electrode on either side of the point of radiation incidence. From measurements of the charge flow to or from each end of the high resistance electrode or alternatively to or from one end plus the charge flow to or from the other electrode the point of incidence is calculated. Either an outer tubular electrode or an inner coaxial wire electrode is of uniform resistance along its length and equal potentials are applied to each end. The outer electrode if resistive may comprise a ceramic tube internally coated with stannic oxide and may provide the gas envelope or be contained in a sealed metal envelope.
