Abstract

1,048,413. Safety harnesses. T. A. EGERTON. Sept. 3, 1963 [July 25, 1962], No. 28519/62. Heading A3V. A safety device for use in vehicles comprises a piston and cylinder connected to the vehicle and to a seat safety strap or to the seat and biasing means acting between the piston and cylinder restraining them from relative movement under the action of a tension load acting between their ends, the biasing means being such as to permit such relative movement under the influence of a tension load, above a predetermined value. The cylinder 12 is secured to the vehicle floor and the safety strap is connected to the piston rod 15. A spring 29 surrounding the piston road is biased by adjusting two rods 23, passing through holes in the piston and fixed nuts 25. Adjustments are read off scale readings 32 on the piston rod. When a sudden tension is applied to the strap the piston moves against the action of the spring and allows the strap to yield. When the tension is released, the spring returns' the piston and a one way ball valve 31 in the piston opens and and allows air,which has passed a sealing disc 21 on the piston to return to the piston rod side of the piston. In an alternative form the piston and cylinder is is connected between the vehicle floor and safety harness on a seat' which is mounted to pivot. The piston has a brake part which co-operates with wedge shaped brake pads on the inside of the cylinder, the braking effect increasing with movement of the piston. The initial spring bias is effected by rotating the piston rod with relation to a fixed nut adjacent the piston.
