[Also in Division F2] A take-up device for a safety harness includes a pneumatic piston and cylinder for providing yielding resistance to paying out movement of a strap and spring means for effecting the take-up, a locking plate being provided in the cylinder which is tilted by a sudden movement of the strap to arrest the strap. The harness strap is connected to an eye at one end of a piston rod 8, with the piston 40 slidable within the cylinder 4 which is secured to the rear of a vehicle seat. A spring 48 extends between the piston 40 and an abutment wall 34 on the cylinder to urge the piston downwardly. A locking plate 44 slidable on the piston rod is urged by a spring 46 to contact the wall 34. The cylinder 4 has apertures above and below the locking plate 44 to provide smooth damping. When the harness is given a sudden jerk, a projection 42 on a head 36 causes the locking plate 44 to tilt and lock against the piston rod arresting the strap. An apertured head 22 is closed by a filter. Alternatively the piston has passages closed by a disc valve on the piston rod. In another embodiment, the locking plate, which is adjacent to and spaced from the piston by a spring, and the piston is apertured. The piston carries the projection and the locking plate is prevented from sliding by a circlip on the rod. An annular member may be secured to the plate to increase its sensitivity. The plate may have one or more non-return valves to provide rapid return action.
