Abstract

1,008,764. Safety harnesses. J. G. FITZGERALD, and C. W. BAKER. Sept. 20, 1963 [June 20, 1962], No. 23772/62. Heading A3V. Safety harness for a vehicle comprises means for sensing a condition of the vehicle indicating an emergency and a tensioning device secured to the vehicle and coupled to the sensing means to reduce the effective length of a strap or straps. Shoulder straps are secured at one end to a snubbing unit 4 bolted to the floor of the vehicle and at the other end are connected to a hip strap. Each hip strap passes round a roller 12 and over the serrated surface of a pivoted lever 72 sprung biased to brake the belt when it is tensioned. Each strap extends as a cord round fixed pulleys 22 to 24 and pulleys 28-31 mounted on a movable axle 27 forming a tensioning device 13 secured beneath the seat. The axles are connected to pistons 25, 26 and cylinders 17, 18 which are connected to a gas chamber 45 between a gas reservoir 42 and a diaphragm 44 supporting a pin 46 spaced from a bolt 52 held retracted by a detent 61. When an emergency arises the gas reservoir is pierced by the pin 46 which is struck by the bolt 52 released from the detent 61 on a latch 59 by the displacement of a bob weight 65 from between and latch and an abutment on casing 40. The escape of gas from the reservoir moves the pistons connected to the pulleys 28 to 31 and tensions the straps.
