Abstract
1,048,180. Stapling machines. R. A. NELSON. Oct. 5, 1965, No. 42252/65. Heading B4C. An apparatus for stapling a workpiece, such as a signature sheet S, while momentarily stopped in transit comprises a carriage 10, 14 for conveying the workpiece, a stop 12 for momentarily arresting the travel of the workpiece, and power-operated stapling and anvil means 20, 22 controlled by a trip switch 34, 32 located in the path of the workpiece so that it is actuated to bring about the operation of the stapling means simultaneously with the momentary arrest of the workpiece. The stapling means 20 includes a driver 42 actuated by a solenoid 48 and adapted to drive staples mounted in a magazine 35, Fig. 3 (not shown). The anvil means 22 is provided with an anvil 23 actuated by a solenoid 48; a pair of stapling and anvil means are adjustably mounted on across bars 18. In operation, a folded signature sheet S is fed from the rolls R of a folding' machine on to the rollers 14 of the carriage, the sheet being carried thereby until its leading edge abuts the switch 34 thereby energizing the solenoids so that staples are driven into the signature sheet. After a certain delay determined by the switch, the solenoids are deenergized so that the sheet is free to be fed by rollers 52, Fig. 1 (not shown), to a further folding machine.
