Abstract

1307549 Web cutting apparatus XEROX CORP 28 May 1970 [2 June 1969] 25628/70 Heading B4B A cutting apparatus comprises means for cutting a web into a succession of sheets and means for deflecting the cut sheets along one of two alternative paths. As described the cutting apparatus is used to cut the web material leaving a data printing machine. The web material is fed into the apparatus by a pair of drive rolls 10, 12 and via a guide plate 50 to a brake means 16. The brake means includes a brake pad 168 which is urged against a back stop 51 to halt the web when a solenoid 160 is energized. Whilst the web is halted the rolls 10, 12 continue to feed the web and so a loop 14 is formed therein. When the brake pad is released and lifted by a return spring 164 rolls 18, 20 feed the web to a cutting means 22. The peripheral speed of rolls 18, 20 is greater than that of rolls 10, 12 so that the loop 14 is removed during this feed. Whilst the web is braked the rolls 18, 20 slip thereon and a knife blade 231 is advanced by energization of a solenoid 220 to coact with a stationary edge 58 to cut the stationary web. The blade 231 is of inverted V-shape and is urged by a spring 230 against the edge 58. A deflector.gate 24 is located beyond the cutting means and is movable between two positions. In one position, shown in full lines, it guides printed documents cut from the web to exit rolls 26, 28 which feed them to, e.g. a binder, stacker or stapler. In the other position, shown in dashed lines the gate 24 directs scrap paper via a web 64 to a scrap disposal area. The operation of the brake means, cutting means, and deflecting means is controlled by an electronic control means which monitors -the operation of the data printer and/or the material fed to the apparatus, e.g. by means of a counter. The control means ensures that the printed documents are cut to a uniform length and that the scrap paper is cut into lengths lying within a certain range.
