A concrete railway sleeper 3 has sheet metal retaining members 10 embedded therein to provide four transverse passages, for the reception of a fastening member of the type described in Specification 861,473, between the upper surface of the concrete and the metal member forming an arch, a further portion of the metal member having a surface at less than 10 degrees to the sleeper surface, for the bearing of portion 9 of the fastening member, the further portion of the metal member being spaced not more than the metal thickness from the sleeper or in contact therewith.
