Abstract

1,047,846. Staircases. Rt. Hon. R. B. BOYLE, EARL OF SHANNON. Aug. 2, 1963 [Aug. 3, 1962], No. 29970/62. Heading E1V. In a spiral staircase comprising a central pillar 11 to receive tubular sleeves 7 each carrying a stair tread 9, an axially compressive force is applied to the sleeves 7 by tensioning the pillar 11 to hold the sleeves fixed. This force is attained by screw-threading one or both ends of the pillar and clamping the assembly between nuts or a nut 13 and a baseplate 12. Each sleeve 7 has a fin 8 to which the tread 9 is attached. The abutting ends of the sleeves may be made accurately square to their axis, or shouldered and recessed to coact, or have mating angles. Collars may be inserted between sleeves. The sleeve ends may be toothed to engage each other.
