[Class 20 (iv)] Concrete is reinforced by bars fitted with anchoring rings which are connected to the bars by means of wedges, the latter engaging with a portion of the bar which has its original rolled surface unchanged and being driven in longitudinally of the bar between the bar and seats formed as grooves in the inside of the ring, the surface of each seat having a shape as if it were generated by a straight line moving parallel with itself. In the construction shown the anchoring ring is secured to the reinforcing rod 4 by wedges 5 tapering in one direction and wedges 6 tapering in the opposite direction, the ring being formed with tapered grooves to receive the wedges. The outer cylindrical surfaces 8 of the wedges are smooth and bear against the smooth bore of the ring, while the inner faces of the wedges are roughened to ensure a firm grip on the reinforcing iron which may also have a roughened surface. The engaging surface may be coated, by means of salt water for instance, to cause them to bond together. The parts are secured together in such manner that the wedges do not move relatively to the reinforcing iron. Thus the ring may be held firmly against the surface of an anvil, the wedges and reinforcing iron then being driven together into the ring. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), the grooves in the ring are rounded to receive wedges of crescent-shaped section. Where the ends of two reinforcing irons are to be joined the rings may have external screw threads upon which is screwed a pipe nut.
