[Also in Division E1] A device for screwing and unscrewing pipes 21 comprises jaws 5 pivoted to levers 2, at 8, and a jaw 7 pivoted to a bracket 9, which can swivel about a rod 10. Levers 2 are pivoted about pivots 3 by an hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder 4. Each of the jaws has serrated recesses 6 of varying curvature, and the jaw is connected to an axle 8 by a spring-urged ball 17 which co-operates with one of two recesses 15, 16. Axle 8 has a cylindrical portion 12, a square portion 13, and a portion 14 of polyhedral form which engages the lever 2. To index a jaw, the axle is moved axially to disengage portion 14 from the lever, and ball 17 engages recess 16. The jaw is indexed and then moved axially to the Fig. 3 (not shown) position.
