Winch-operated load-handling apparatus has means to alter the effective purchase without re-reeving the rope. In the derrick the slewing arrangement of which is shown pulley-blocks 16 of the snatch-type are mounted at the free end of the jib and pulley blocks 15 are fixed to posts 10. The rope 14 is received between the blocks 15, 16 and passes between drums of winches 12, 13. If all three pulleys of the blocks 15, 16 are in use a six-part purchase results and in order to convert the arrangement to a four-part purchase a rope loop is removed from a pulley of the snatch block 16 and passed round a fixed snatch block 20. To reduce the arrangement to a twopart purchase a second loop is passed round a second fixed snatch block 20. The arrangement can be used for horizontal load-handling.
