Abstract

Pulleys 8, Fig. 1, which guide the lifting cables 6 from the base of a derrick 1 to winches 9, are transferred from mountings 16, 18 to mountings 17, 19 which are respectively on opposite sides of the base 7, thereby uncrossing the cables 6 which become crossed when the derrick 1 is swung through the vertical, by luffing tackles 10, to a working position over a hold 4. As described, the luffing cables pass through offset posts 12 and adjustable guides 40 to winches 41. The pulleys 11 swivel on the posts 12 and the derrick head 5 also swivels. The head 5, Fig. 6, comprises two halves 28, 29 which support the replaceable upper block 36 of the lifting tackle. The pulleys 8,. Fig. 5, comprise sheaves 20 and blocks 21 and are universally mounted on pins 16-19 by screwin caps 26 retained by threaded safety pins 27.
