Abstract

1463503 Elevator; luffing arm apparatus SIMON ENG DUDLEY Ltd 14 Oct 1974 [27 Oct 1973 4 April 1974] 50281/73 and 15058/74 Headings B8L and B8H [Also in Division E1] Access equipment is mounted to enable access to the interior surfaces of a structure bounding a large space such as the cargo section of a large crude carrier, the access equipment comprising a pole 10 which is clamped at or adjacent its upper end by a special fitting 12 positioned on the topside of the carrier deck around a hole H, the lower end of the pole 10 being located in a fitting 11 which prevents lateral movement of the pole, but does not support the pole 10 against downward movement so that the pole 10 is maintained in a state of tension by virtue of its own weight. A pair of carriages 13 is slidable along the pole 10, each carriage 13 having a telescopic boom 19 pivotally mounted thereon by means of plates 22, 23, the outer end of each boom 19 pivotally supporting a platform or cage 26. The carriages 13 and thus the booms 19 are movable vertically along the pole by means of cables 16 attached to respective winches 17 on a derrick 18, each boom 19 being luffable in a vertical plane by means of a respective winch 29 connected by a cable 30 to the outer end of the boom. The booms 19 each comprise an upper and lower telescopic arm 20, 21 and each platform 26 comprises a central section (27) to which further sections may be attached, Fig. 2 (not shown). The pole 10 is made up from a number of pole sections (50), each section (50) consisting of two halves (51) bolted together, Fig. 5 (not shown).
