The work rolls 14 are changed in a mill by a carriage 16 having a section for supporting the new set of work rolls, and a section for receiving the old set of work rolls, from the mill, the carriage being movable in a first direction normal to the pass-line, and in a second direction parallel to the pass line. The mill stand has back-up rolls 12, 13, carried by chocks 10, 10A, Fig. 1 (not shown), the lower chocks 10A being supported by rocker pads 11 on a sledge 15, and the work roll assembly 14 comprises work rolls 18, 20, mounted in interfitting chocks 21, 23. Chocks 21 are provided with wheels 22 so that assembly 14 is movable on rails 26, 26A mounted on carriage 16. Carriage 16 is mounted on two sets of wheels 28, 30 which run on rails 34, and 32 respectively in directions normal to each other. Portion 34A of rails 34 can be raised and lowered by wedges 42, 46 actuated by a cylinder 60. The front two wheels 28, Figs. 2 and 4 (not shown), are driven from hydraulic motors 94 through gears 88, 86. Secured to plates 112 on the platform 24 of carriage 16 are guides 114, 114A for crossheads 118, 118A, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), the crossheads being connected to recesses 128 on chocks 21 by arms 124. Each crosshead is movable by a chain 134 carried on sprockets 140 driven by hydraulic motors 141. For changing a work roll assembly 14, carriage 16 carrying the assembly 14A is traversed along rails 34 towards the mill stand by actuation of motors 94 with the portion 34A of the rails raised. When the carriage is adjacent the mill with the empty rails 26 aligned with the wheels 22 of assembly 14, in the stand, portion 34A is lowered until wheels 30 engage track 32. Crossheads 118 are moved towards chocks 21 in the assembly 14 and the latter is withdrawn from the stand on to the rails 26 of carriage 16, Fig. 8 (not shown). Carriage 16 is moved by an hydraulic cylinder along rails 32, until assembly 14A is aligned with the stand, crossheads 118A are actuated to push assembly 14A into the stand and the carriage is retracted by motors 94.
