Abstract
<PICT:1042988/C6-C7/1> In a process for refining iron in a multiple open hearth furnace having working chambers A and B alternately used for refining and preheating, one or more nozzles 7 supplying air and/or oxygen are disposed through the roofs 6 at about 40-60 degrees to the bath surface and cause directed flames to develop in exhaust gases which have passed through the throat 4. The latter may have an axially disposed entraining nozzle in it and the chambers have removable oxygen lances in the exhaust ducts 3. Two nozzles 7 may be used disposed in a row at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the furnace and their axes should converge to include an angle of at least 8 degrees and preferably 16-20 degrees. A third nozzle may be arranged between the two its jet lying in the axis of symmetry of the jets from the two nozzles.
