Abstract

1,041,399. Electrically tripped switches. SQUARE D CO. Nov. 18, 1963 [Feb. 25, 1963], No. 45512/63. Heading H2B. [Also in Division E2] A latching mechanism for an electromagnetic relay of the type disclosed in Specification 1,021,152, comprises a rod 56 secured to the contact carrier 64 of the relay and slidable in a member 44 secured to the armature 26 of the latching mechanism, the rod being maintained in its latched position by balls 50 carried by the member 44 which are retained in position by the core 22 of the latching mechanism. The balls 50 bear against the frusto-conical surface 52 of the core and one of the opposed frustoconical surfaces of the rod. On energization of the relay the rod 56 is raised to the position shown where it is retained, against the force of the return spring 74 of the relay, by the balls 50. The latch rod may be released manually by pulling member 44 outwardly or electromagnetically by energizing the coil 18 of the latch mechanism. The member 44 is returned to the position shown by a spring 54 when it is released or the mechanism is de-energized.
