Abstract

1,041,166. Contact printers. NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO. May 28, 1965 [June 10, 1964], No. 22729/65. Heading G2A. In a photographic contact printer, a strip of film 21 and a master 16 are squeezed together be tween a transparent cylindrical roller 27 and a roller 26 having a resilient cover 28 which has a larger diameter at its centre than at its ends, the strips being exposed therebetween. The roller 26 is mounted on a continuously driven axle 31 rotating in bearings 32, 33 which are mounted so as to enable the pressure of roller 26 on the roller 27 to be adjustable The roller 27 is freely mounted on a fixed shaft 39. Light from a pinhole source 48 is stopped by a mask 51 having a narrow rectangular opening and is then directed by a stationary mirror 53 to form a narrow rectangular exposing (printing) station for the film 21. The shape of the cover 28 ensures that the centre of the film is pressed into contact with the master first, thus flattening irregularities in the emulsion surface and allowing air to escape from between the strips. The light source may be arranged to direct light more than once through the cylinder wall 36. The master 16 may be wrapped around the wall 36 to make more than one copy without having to rethread the master.
