Abstract

1,041,071. Stitched seams; sewing machines. R.&W. H. SYMINGTON & CO. Ltd., and H. JONES. April 9, 1964 [April 10, 1963], No.14418/63. Heading D1G. A stitched seam is made by introducing a workpiece between the separated lips of a strip of stretched lipped elastic, and sewing the workpiece to the lips while maintaining the strip in the stretched condition. A sewing machine for performing the operation comprises puller feed rollers and work-tensioning rollers situated respectively after and before the stitching point, means for opening the abutting edges of a strip folded upon itself, and means for guiding the strip to the stitching point. As shown, the edge of a workpiece 25 is inserted between the opened lips 16, 17 of a strip 13 of lipped elastic stretched between draw rollers 2, 3, Fig. 1 not shown, and tensioning rollers 7, 8, the lips are allowed to re-close and are then sewn to the workpiece by the needle 5. Rollers 7, 8 have corrugated inter-engaging formations 15. Roller 7 is driven by a shaft 26 via a one-way clutch 27 carrying a crank 28 having an adjustable pin-and slot connection 32 to a connecting rod 29 actuated by a crank disc on the main shaft of the machine. After passing the rollers 7, 8, the upper lip 17 is turned through 180 degrees by fingers 9, 10 carried by a bar 11 extending from an extension 12 of a fixed base plate 6. A bar 18, secured to plate 6, has a cut-away portion 19 providing a guide for the unfolded strip 13. The workpiece 25 is laid over the bar 18 for insertion between the opened lips 16, 17, lip 17 then closing automatically as the strip passes to the stitching point, to which it is guided by a bar 20 adjustably fixed by a pin-and-slot connection 22, 23 to an extension 24 of plate 6.
