Abstract
1344196 Folding fabric edges SAMCOSTRONG Ltd 19 April 1971 [28 Jan 1970 6 Feb 1970 13 March 1970 (2)] 20995/71 Heading B5K [Also in Divisions B8 and D1] Work positioning devices are provided with a flow of air which causes the edge of the work to move into contact with an abutment surface of the guide. Edges of material which are to be cemented, folded over to form a hem and optionally stitched in addition are introduced over parts 624 (Fig. 22) into the devices where currents of air from nozzles 634 urge the edges around the bends of the passage between plates 622, 624. The work is then fed by other means to a presser foot (618, Fig. 15, not shown). The presser foot, the plates and the air may be heated to activate the cement. Another positioning device (Fig. 7) comprises a lower work supporting plate 312 and an upper work constraining plate of transparent plastics, air being directed by means 342, 344 along the passage between the plates to urge the edge, of material introduced therein, against abutment 334. A cement applicator 314 is provided together with feed rolls 316, 318 which move work, located by the guides, transversely of the airflow. The rollers 316, 318, which may be considerably narrower than depicted, may have convex faces to provide point contact with the work or, as shown, roller 318 may have a narrow raised band 326. Other hemmers and guides for sewing machines (see Division D1) are disclosed.
