Abstract

814,551. Sewing machines. SLUMBERLAND Ltd. June 28, 1957 [July 14, 1956], No. 21847/56. Class 112 [Also in Group XIV] Seams, presser feet, work-guides, stands. A method of securing together adjacent edges of fabric components, such as the cover 10 and border 13 of a mattress, consists in stitching the fabric around cords 12, 15 to form respective beaded edges 11, 14, and securing the edges together by a sewing machine having means for automatically bringing into correct alignment the beaded edges and for applying a line of stitching 16 through the edges on the inner side of the beads. The machine may be arranged to feed and apply a tape 17 which is folded over the beaded edges and secured by the stitching 16. The mattress is supported on a table top and the machine, in which the needle 24 reciprocates in a direction at an angle of 45 degrees to the upper surface of the mattress, is mounted on guide rails disposed on the table around the mattress. The sewing, on being commenced, continues automatically while the machine travels around the mattress until it again reaches its starting point. The machine comprises an arm 25 disposed at right angles to the direction of movement of the needle. Guide members 26, 27, mounted on the arm, the former being secured by a screw 28, are disposed in advance of the needle to receive the beaded edges and bring them together in correct alignment. Said edges are maintained in alignment by a groove 29 in the presser foot 30, a groove 31 in a flange 32 on a work feeding foot 33, and a shoulder 34 on the arm. The tape 17, if used, is fed to a folding device of known type mounted in advance of the needle.
