This invention relates to a` health mattress, andthe primary object of the invention is to provide breathing vents inone end of the mattress and foot spaces in the opposite end of the mattress whereby the occupant of the mattress can be placed thereon so that he can breathe while lying on his stomach and his toes will enter the spaces'at the opposite end so that his feet will be comfortably positioned therein.
Another object of the invention is to provide a mattress that is wedge shaped, having an all felt filler, a center equalizing spring or an all sponge rubber filler.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accmpanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of an embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a side view thereof;
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view of a modified form of the'invention wherein the spring is eliminated, and the ller is entirely of felt;
Figure 5 is the same where the iller is entirely of rubber;
Figure 6 is a sectional view on the line 6-6 of Figure 1;
Figure 7 is a fragmentary elevational view of another modified form of the invention and Figure 8 is a perspective view of a trough to be used with the form of mattress shown in Figure 7.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the reference numeral I generally designates the mattress which may be made in single or double bed widths.
The mattress is wedge shaped in cross-section, and this formation is obtained by a central layer of felt II which extends for the entire width and length of the mattress, and is of the same dimensions throughout.
Positioned on top and bottom of the layer II in contact therewith, for the length and breadth thereof, are the wedge shaped layers I2 and I3 respectively, and these layers are made of loosely packed felt while the layer II is made of a more compressed heavier felt, or rubber may be substituted for the felt.
The ticking I4 covers the layers on all sides to form a low foot end I and a higher head end I6. The ticking I4 is tufted as at I'I in the conventional manner.
If, as shown in Figure 1, the mattress is to b `used for a double bed, rectangular shaped open'- ings i8 are placed in the mattress in proper position for the occupants of the mattress. The openings are open at the top and -bottom to provide breathing vents for the occupants when they are sleeping on their stomachs. The openings are closed at one end by the ticking I4, and at the other end 4by the mattress proper.
At the opposite edge of the mattress, on both faces thereof, are placed half-moon shaped depressions IS which are in longitudinal alinement with the openings I8, and permit the occupants to conveniently place their toes therein for comfort. The depressions are on both faces of the mattress, so it can be reversed as desired and the depressions are of various depths to accommodate feet of various lengths.
Extending longitudinally of the mattress, at the center thereof, are relatively spaced equalizing springs 20 for the comfort of the occupants. The springs prevent the mattress from sagging in the center, thus in a double mattress, as shown, the mattress will not have a tendency to form a depression in the center into which the occupants would sink toward each other. Each occupant would therefore remain on his own side of the mattress greatly increasing his sleeping comfort.
In Figure 4, the central layer I I is as previously described, but layers 2I and 22 are made of a heavier felt or rubber than layer II, and the springs 20 are omitted.
In Figure 5, the central layer 23 is made of sponge rubber, and the outer layers 24 and 25 respectively are made of heavier rubber.
Therefore; when a person desires to lie on his stomach and keep his face downward, he can breathe properly through the air vent I8. His head will be properly supported, and his toes will enter the depressions I9 according to the length of his feet.
In the form shown in Figure 7, the openings I8 are eliminated and the mattress is provided with slits 26 which extend entirely through the mattress I0 to be closed by the compression of the material forming the mattress, except when the hollow trough shaped members 21 are inserted therein to provide breathing vents for the purpose above described.
It is believed that the construction and use of the mattress will be apparent to those skilled in the art, and it is to be understood that changes in the minor details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts may be resorted to, provided they fall within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A mattress of the type described, comprising a central layer of filling material, Wedge shaped layers of lling material engaging both sides of said central layer, equalizing springs in said central layer along its longitudinal center a covering for said layers, and breathing Vents in said layers and said covering at one end thereof.
2. The invention as in claim 1 wherein the central layer is made of light felt and the outer layers are made of heavy felt.
3. The invention as in claim 1 wherein the breathing vents are rectangular in cross-section, and extend in open position throughout the entire depth of the mattress.
4. The invention as in claim 1, wherein the breathing vents are slits extending through the entire depth of the mattress and are in normally closed position, and hollow substantially triangular shaped troughs are adapted to be inserted 4 in said slits to place said slits in open position. 5. A mattress as in claim 1 wherein half-moon depressions are provided in said top layer at the end opposite to the end wherein the breathing vents are provided and the depressions are in longitudinal alignment with said breathing vents.
