JOSEPH T. L. LAVAGETTO, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
MATTRESS.
Application filed May 31,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosEPH THOMAS LAW- RENCE LAvAor/r'ro, acitizen of the United States, residing at Portland. in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Mattress, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in mattresses in which the upper surface tapers from the head end toward the foot end and in which an upwardly extending rolled rim is provided on both sides of the mattress.
The objects of my invention are: first. to increase the comfort of the sleeper by giving the body a more natural position: and second to prevent the sleeper from accidentally rolling off the bed.
Other objects and advantages are to be found in the construction and arrangement of parts as will be described hereinafter in the specification and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
I attain these objects in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of the tress.
Fig. 2 is a side view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section through Fig. 2 along the line 3-3.
Fig. 4 is a section through Fig. 2 along the line 44.
Fig. 5 is a section through Fig. 2 along the line Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The body 1 of the mattress may be manufactured of any suitable material. there is however more material employed at the head end than at the foot end. In addition thereto the mattress is crowned at the longitudinal center line, said crown being a maximum at the head end as shown in Fig. 3 and gradually flattening out to a perfect level at the foot end. as illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5. The sides of the mattress are provided with up wardly extending rims 2 which also attain maximum dimensions at the head end and entire mat- 1922. Serial No. 564.712.
gradually taper down to nothing at about one half or two thirds of the length of the mattress. Said rim is preferably produced by stitches 3 which extend vertically through the mattress, as the resulting crevice is easily cleaned of dust and lint.
- The mattress as above outlined will give the sleeper a more natural position; it removes the material from a place where none is needed and concentrates said material in a place where greater comfort is produced; it permits the sleeper to turn with greater facihty from one side to the other; it furnishes a railing which prevents the sleeper from rolling off the bed; and finally, it can easily be kept clean; yet all of these advantages are produced without any increase in manufacturing cost.
Having thus described my invention it will be seen that my objects have been accomphshed and though I have shown the preferred form of construction I reserve to myself the right to make minor changes providmg I do not violate the spirit and principle of my invention.
I claim 1. As an article of manufacture. a mattress tapering from the head end toward the foot end. a crown in the upper surface of said mattress along the longitudinal center line. said crown tapering from the head end toward the foot end, upwardly extending rims at the sides of the mattress. said rims being of maximum dimensions at the head end and tapering down to nothing toward the foot end. J
2. As an article of manufacture. a mattress tapering from the head end toward the foot end, a crown at the longitudinal center line. said crown being a maximum at the head end and diminishing toward the foot end. a rim produced by stitching the mattress vertically near the edges. said rim be ing of maximum dimensions at the head end and diminishing toward the foot end.
Signed by me at Portland, Oregon, this 20th day of May. 1922.
JOSEPH. T. L. LAVAGETTO.
