Abstract

1333829 Sewing machine; feeding work POLYGRAPH LEIPZIG KOMBINAT FUR POLYGRAPHISCHE MASCHINEN UND AUSRUSTUNGEN 14 May 1971 14953/71 Heading D1G Sheets 1 fed together along a path are stitched together by applying a thread piece 20 to one external surface of the superposed sheets, passing the ends of the thread through the sheets and sealing the legs to the surface from which the ends protrude. The stitching machine disclosed comprises three upper and four lower belts 5, 2 respectively the end rollers of which also carry a sheet piercing disc 14 and counter disc 15 which perforate the sheets to permit lengths of thread 20, cut off by a cutter 19 from a supply 17 and carried to the sheets by a feeding disc 18, to be held to the sheets by moving presser springs 12 (as at 'B') and have their ends pushed through the perforations by needles (23, Fig. 5 not shown). The moving sheets then pass over a heated rail 24 which flattens and seals the thread ends (26, Fig. 6, not shown) to the undersurface of the sheets. The needle unit may be of any known construction and may comprise the parallel crank construction disclosed in Specification 1333829 wherein the needles move with the sheets. The presser springs 12 are carried on a chain 8, or in a modification (Figs. 7 and 8, not shown) be carried by carriers (36) attached at spaced points thereon to pins (37, 38) provided on toothed belts (30, 33) moving about pairs of pulleys, the axes of one pair of belt pulleys being displaced from the axes of the other pair. The apparatus is applied to stitching folded sheets which are then folded again, along the line of stitches.
