Abstract

Apparatus comprises a twin-needle chain stitching machine for hemming the respective edges of a strip of mattress border material, a multi-needle two-thread chain stitching machine for forming internal lines of stitching parallel to said edges and means interconnecting said machines for synchronous drive thereof from a common power source. A two-thread chain stitching machine 2, mounted on a cabinet-like support 1, has four needles 6 and draws needle and looper threads from packages 3, 4. Compressed air is directed on to the needles from apertures 44d in a manifold 44c. A separately-biased presser foot 44e is provided for each needle. The machine is driven by a separate motor and has feed rollers 11 for a mattress border strip 7. The latter comprises layers 8, 9, 10 drawn from respective drums 12, 13, 14 mounted on a trolleylike stand 15. The layers pass through the bars of a tensioning device 16 and an edge-folder to a chain stitching machine 18 which is mounted on stand 15 and has two sewing heads 19, 20 laterally adjustable to position the respective needles 19a, 20d at the edges of the strip, the machine 18 drawing threads from packages 29, 30. Heads 19, 20 are slidably mounted on bars 21, 22 and have fixed thereto respective units 23, 24 engaged by oppositely-handed screwed portions 26a, 26b of a journalled shaft 26. A pinion 27a, on the latter may be engaged with a pinion 27 which is mounted on a pivoted arm 28a and is operable by a hand wheel 28 to move heads 19, 20 together or apart. The driving shaft 33 of machine 18 is connected by a driving belt 31 to the driving shaft of machine 2. Shaft 33 is splined to receive internally-splined pinions 37, 38 respectively coupled to pinions 39, 41 and 40, 42 for driving the needles and loopers of the heads 19, 20. A pinion 27b on shaft 33 may be engaged with the pinion 27 for enabling machine 18 to be driven by the handwheel 28.
