In stitching a sliding clasp fastener tape 38 to tapes 74 and 76 in a sewing machine, a pull-feed is provided on the delivery side of the machine, and the tape 38 is fed to the machine by a roller running at a slightly lower rate than the pull-feed, in order to tension the work. A twin-needle machine 14 is mounted on a table 12. The fastener tape 38 is led from a drum 26 through a D-shaped guide 70 and through an H-shaped guide 56 which is angularly and laterally adjustable. The tape 38 then passes over an idler roller 52 carried by an arm 54 rigid with guide 56, and over a driving roller 50. The latter is carried by a shaft 48 driven by a belt 49 from a variable speed gearbox 44 which is driven by a belt 46 from a motor 20. The tape 38 then passes through a fixed channel guide 72 to the twin needles 30 of the sewing machine where it is joined by the strips 74 and 76, the work passing between a support plate 32 and a foot 28. Plate 32 is formed with a groove 34 to accommodate the fastener elements. Foot 28 is not pressurebiased, but merely rests on the work. The needles are arranged to swing in the line of stitching to assist the feed. The completed work passes between a pair of rollers 36, 36<SP>1</SP>, the lower roller 36 being positively driven, and the upper roller being downwardly biased by a spring 42. The amount of tension is controlled by varying the speed of roller 50, varying the amount of bight around roller 50 by varying the position of roller 52, and by varying the amount of braking applied to shaft 48 by brake blocks 64 and 66 adjustable by means of screws 68.
