Abstract
966,650. Stitched seams; sewing machines. G. M. PFAFF A. G. Oct. 11, 1962 [Oct. 14, 1961], No. 38475/62. Heading D1G A band comprising a pair of strips is sewn to the edge of a garment on a double-needle sewing machine, each needle of which co-operates with a looptaker mounted in a post, the posts being spaced apart to allow the passage therebetween of material being sewn. A first strip 64, Fig. 6, is folded upon itself and the edges are sewn together by longitudinal seams 65a to produce a tag 65. The respective edges of a garment 66 and second strip 67 are folded outwardly through 90 degrees and are attached to the respective edges of the strip 64 by continuations of the seams 65a, a cover strip 68 also being sewn in between strips 64 and 67. Strips 64 and 67 are then inverted, Fig. 6a, and the free edge of strip 67 is attached to the strip 64 and the garment 66 by a seam parallel to the seam 65a uniting the latter. Finally, the free edge of strip 68, which is folded to cover strip 67, is sewn to the garment 66. In a modification, Fig. 9, an additional strip 69 is fed under strip 64 and is attached with the latter to the garment 66 and the strip 67 by the respective seams 65a, the cover strip 68 being omitted. The seams 65a are sewn on a machine having twin needles 9 carried by a needle bar 5 arranged for swinging movement to assist the work feed. Each needle co-operates with a looptaker mounted in a respective post 16 and 17 which are spaced apart and rise from plates disposed in a recess 15 in the base-plate 1 of the machine. A presser bar 10 carries three presser feet 12, 13, 14, the outer feet 12 and 14 co-operating with respective feed dogs 22 and 23 mounted in the respective posts 16 and 17. The feed is assisted by a driven roller 33 co-operating with idler rollers 49. Each of the latter is carried at the upper end of a bar 48 mounted for vertically-sliding movement in a respective post 16,17 and pivoted at its lower end to a respective end of a two-armed lever 45 pivoted at 44 to a fixed bracket 43. Roller 33 is carried by a bar 25 which is biased downwardly by a spring 28 and is adapted to be raised by a lever 29. Crank driving-means 35, associated with roller 33, are connected by a rod 42 to a crank 41 on a pivoted shaft 39, and a crank 40 on the latter is adjustably connected to a pitman 36 actuated by an eccentric 37 on the arm shaft 7. Strip 64 passes downwardly to the needles through a guide 52 carried at the lower end of a bar 53 pivoted at its upper end, at 54, to the sewing machine head 4. Strip 67 passes vertically through the space between posts 16, 17 to the needles in a guide 55 comprising vertical plates 59, 60 closed at their lower ends and fixed to a vertical rod 57 pivoted in a bracket 56 fixed to post 16. Adjustably fixed to the upper end of rod 57 is a finger 62 carrying a horizontal flange 63 which co-operates with the upper edge of plate 60 to fold the upper edge of strip 67 outwardly through 90 degrees. The garment 66 is fed manually to the stitch point through the space between the posts 16, 17.
