This invention relates to improvements in sewing machinesand has for its object to provide means whereby a garment and a strip of material having fastening means thereon is '5 fed to one or more needles of a sewing machine.
Another ob'ect is to provide means including a guide or a strip ofmaterial havmg fastening means thereon and a means for forming a hem on the edge of the garment upon which the strip is to be secured, said guide being disposed above said hemming means and substantially in vertical alignment therewith. V
Another object is to provide a resser-foot having a longitudinal channel or the passage therethrough of the fastening means on the strip of material.
Another object is to provide certain improvements in the form, construction and ar rangement of the several parts whereby the above named and other objects may be eifectively attained.

In the form shown in Figs. 1 to 7 inclusive, of the drawings, the portion of the sewing machine shown is of well known and approved construction and operates in the usual manner. The head of the machine is denoted by 1, the reciprocating needle bar by 2, the needles by 3, the resser-foot bar by 4, the resser-foot by 5, the upturned toe by 5*, which foot is connected to the bar 4 by a bracket 6 and the table is denoted by 7. The resser-foot is pivoted at 8 to the bracket 6 and provided with a longitudinal channel 9 which extends throughout the foot and toe as shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, the purpose of which will be hereinafter explained.
A guide 10 of substantiall tubular construction is provided with a ared mouth 11 which comprises an upper wall 11*, a curved lower wall 1l**, and vertical side walls 11*** connecting the upper and lower walls. The mouth 11 is arranged to conveniently receive and feed a strip of material 12, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, having a plurality of fastening means, such as hooks 13, secured thereon at predetermined intervals to the guide 10. The wall 11* has an opening 14* for the passages of the hooks 13 therethrough to the guide 10. The guide 10 has a longitudinal slot 14 in its upper portion, which registers with -the opening 14* in the upper wall 11* through which opening and slot the hooks 13 project and pass with the strip to the resser-foot 5.
The guide 10 is inclined downwardly toward the resser-foot to assist, by gravity, in feeding the strip therethrough and is held in this position by means of the vertically disposed wall carried by the base plate 16, which is secured on the table by means of a screw 17, shown in dotted outline in Fig. 1.
A means for forming a hem 18 on the edge of the garment 19, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, is provided, and includes a hemmer 20, of any well known and approved form. ThlS hemlner is formed integral with the wall 15 and base plate 16, as shown in several figures and-disposed substantially in vertical alignment with the. guide 10, so that as the strip is fed downwardly through the guide it will be associated with the garment before it reaches the resser-foot thereby covering and rotecting the edge of the garment turned by t e hemmer. In this position the strip with the hooks 13 thereon will be passed toward and under the resser-foot, where-the needles 3 will engage the strip and garment and sew the same together. As the strip passes from the guide 10 to and under the resser-foot the hooks will enter at the toe and be carried through the longitudinal channel 9. While passing under the resser-foot the strip will be stitched upon opposite sides of the hook as shown at 12* in Figs. 6 and 7.
In the form shown in Figs. 8 to 14 inclusive, a guide 21 and hemmer 22 are arranged on a base plate 23 whichis secured to the table 24 by means of a screw 25. The guide 21 is inclined downwardly toward the toe 26* of the presser-foot 26 and provided with a tubular portion 27 having a longitudinal slot 28. The flared mouth 29 at the upper end of the guide 21 directs the strip of material 30 to the tubular portion 27. This strip of 'materialis provided with fastening means,
such as eyes 31, secured thereon at predetermined intervals. The hemmer 22 is constructed so that the edge of the garment 32 will be turned in its passage therethrough .to form a hem 33 as clearl shown in Figs. 13 and 14.
The presseroot 26 with its toe 26* has a longitudinal channel 34 therethrough for cured to the table of the sewing machine for receiving the edge of the garment, a vertically disposed wall carried thereby, a down wardl inclined tubular guide secured to said wall for feeding a strip of material having fastening means projecting upwardly therefrom, said guide having a verticall flared mouth and substantially straight si e walls for directing the strip into the guide and a longitudinal slot in its upper wall for the passage of the fastening means therethrou h, and means for forming a hem on the e ge of the garment, said means being carried by the wall and interposed between the base plate and tubular guide.
3. The combination with a stitching mechanism of a sewing machine, of a guide secured to the table of the sewing machine for feeding a strip of 'material having upwardly projecting fastening means thereon, means carried by said guide for forming a hem on the edge of the garment below said strip, a presserfoot having an upturned toe, and a longitudinal channel disposed in the under surface of the foot and toe, said presser-foot being adapted to engage the strip of material and permit the passage of the fastening-means through said channel. i

It is obvious that various changes may be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; and hence, I do not intend to be limited to'the details herein shown and described except as they may be included in the claims.
What I claim is:

An attachment for sewing machines comprising, a base plate adapted to be secured to the table of the sewing machine for receiving the edge of the garment, a vertically disposed wall carried thereby, a tubular guide secured to said wall for feeding a strip of material having fastening means projecting upwardly therefrom, said guide having
