(Cl. 112-140) This invention relates to sewing machines and more particularly to a blind stitching attachment for sewing machines whereby a conventional sewing machine may be easily adapted to perform blind stitching.

Certain sewing machines are provided with a needle bar, to which a needle is secured, which may reciprocate horizontally, laterally or perpendicular to the direction of horizontal feed of the material and in synchronism with the vertical reciprocation of the needle bar so that a zigzag stitch may be made. It is desirable that an Vattachment be provided for such machines which will `new and improved blind stitching attachment for sewing machines which is simple in structure and easily attachable to a sewing machine.

It is still another object of the invention to provide a new and improved blind stitching attachment for sewing machines which requires a minimum of efort and attention on the part of the operator.

With the foregoing objects in View, the invention has further reference to certain features of accomplishment which will become apparent as the description proceeds, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:

Figure l is a perspective view showing the blind stitching attachment secured to the presser foot bar of a sewing machine and in operation blind stitching a piece of material;

Figure 2 is an exploded perspective view of the attachment;

Figure 3 is a top plan view of the attachment showing the manner in which it guides a piece of material during blind stitching operations; l

Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 4 4 of Figure 3;

Figure 5 is an enlarged top plan view of a piece of material having the type of blind stitching shown in Figures 1, 3 and 4; and,

Figure 6 is a top plan View of a piece of material showing another form of blind stitching.

Referring now to the drawing, the blind stitching attachment 10 includes a presser foot 11 and an adaptor 12 which connects the presser foot to the presser foot bar 13 of a sewing machine.

The adaptor has a pair of parallel spaced

14 and 15 at the upper end thereof which are adapted to extend about the downwardly tapered lower end of `the presser foot bar 13 in the manner shown. A screw `i6 extends through the slot 17 formed by the two

14 and 15 of the adaptor into the usual threaded lateral bore (not shown) provided in the presser foot bar of a sewing machine. A washer 18 is interposed between the head of the screw and the

bent arms

14 and 15.

The downwardly extending flat portion 19 of the adaptor is provided with a threaded aperture 20 adjacent its lower end. A screw 21 is adapted to extend through a washer 21a and a horizontal elongate slot 22 in an upstanding end ange 23 of the presser foot 11 into 2,699,743 Patented Jan. 18, 1955 the threaded aperture to secure the presser foot to the adaptor. It will be apparent that the foot plate may be adjusted laterally relative to the adaptor due to the provision of the elongate slot.

The presser foot includes a ilat elongate plate por tion 24 having an upstanding bracing side flange 25. The plate portion 24 is provided with an elongate trans- Verse needle opening or slot 26 through which the needle 2'7, which is secured to the needle bar 28 of the sewing machine, may extend. The needle bar is capable of both vertical reciprocation and lateral reciprocation trans- `versely of the plate portion 24 of the presser foot.

The plate portion 24 of the presser foot is provided with a pair of open-ended elongate slots 29 and 30 which extend from the side edge 31 of the plateportion which is opposite and remote ,from the side flange 25. The portions of the plate portion 24 defining the side edges of the slot ,29 are beveled upwardly to form the opposed parallel

beveled surfaces

32 and 33. The portions of the plate portion defining the slot 30 are similarly beveled upwardly to form the opposed beveled surfaces 34 and 35. The slot 29 is of lesser length than the slot 30 for a purpose to be described below.

In use, the adaptor is firmly secured to the presser foot bar by means of the screw 16. The presser foot is then adjusted transversely by means of its screw 21 and slot 22 connection with the adaptor to position its needle slot 26 over a corresponding slot (not shown) in the needle plate (not shown) of the sewing machine.

The side portion 36 of the sheet 37 of the material to be blind stitched is then bent back on the material to form a fold 38. The sheet is then folded inwardly of the side portion 36 as at 39 to cause an intermediate portion 4t) to overlie the edge of the side portion 36. The sheet is then folded again to form a fold 41 which is disposed inwardly of the fold 38 and overlies the side portion 36.

The side portion 36 of the sheet is theninserted in the slot 30 so that the fold 38 abuts the end wall or edge 42 of the slot while the portion 4t) of the sheet is inserted in the slot 29 so that the fold 41 abuts the end wall or edge 43 of the slot. The presser foot bar 13 is then lowered in the usual manner so that the portions of the material to be blind stitched are disposed between the needle plate (not shown) of the sewing machine and the presser foot and are held thereby so that the material will be advanced past the needle 27 by the usual feed means. causes the needle bar to reciprocate both vertically and laterally to form zigzag stitches 44. The lateral displacement of the needle is so adjusted by the usual means that the thread is stitched through the fold 41 at points 45 and through the side portions 36 at points 46. When the portion 40 is moved back to its normal position to parallelism with the main portion of the sheet, the fold 38 and the side portion 36 will be disposed on the inner or blind side of the sheet where they will not be in view. The thread extends through the material at points 45 and even if it extends to the outer side of the material, the stitches will be barely perceptible under close scrutiny.

The slots 29 and 30 serve as guides for the folded over portions of the sheet and insure that the distance between the

41 and 38 is maintained uniform through the length or breadth of the material. The parallel beveled `

surfaces

32 and 33 and the parallel beveled surfaces 34 and 3S insure that the material Will pass smoothly through the slots without binding or wrinkling. The operator of the sewing machine can thus perform blind stitching operations with a minimum expenditure of effort and attention, the slots 29 and Sil permitting the operator to easily guide the `material past the needle while `maintaining the folds 38 .and 41 uniformly spaced.

If desired, the side portion or hem 36 may be basted to portion 47 before the blind stitching operation is performed.

In Figure 6 is illustrated another form of blind stitching in which a plurality of longitudinal stitches 48 are interposed between each laterally extending stitch 49 which passes through the fold 41. lt will be seen now that a new and improved blind stitching attachment for sewing machines has been provided which includes a presser foot 11 which is attachable to the presser foot bar 13 of a sewing machine by an adaptor 12. Moreover, it will be seen that the presser foot is transversely adjustable on the adaptor due to the screw 21 and slot 22 connection. It will also be apparent that the presser foot includes an elongate plate portion which is provided with a needle slot and a pair of open ended slots of unequal lengths which are adapted to receive and hold in proper position folded portions of 'v a sheet of material during blind stitching operations. Manifestly, the construction as shown and described 1s capable of some modification and such modification as may be construed to fall within the scope and meaning of the appended claims is also considered to be within the spirit and intent of the invention.

What is claimed is:

l: A blind stitching attachment for sewing machines having a presser foot bar comprising a presser foot having a flat elongate plate portion, an upright bracing flange coextensive with one side edge of said plate portion, said plate portion having an elongate needle aperture extending therethrough and a pair of open ended parallel slots extending transversely from the opposite side edge of the plate portion, said open ended slots being of unequal lengths, the confronting edges of each of said slots being inclined upwardly and forwardly, the shorter of said open ended slots being located between said needle aperture and the longer of said open ended slots; and means for connecting said presser foot to said presser foot bar.

2. A blind stitching attachment for sewing machines having a presser foot bar comprising a presser foot having a fiat elongate plate portion, said plate portion having an elongate needle aperture extending therethrough and a pair of open ended parallel slots extending transversely from one side edge of the plate portion, said open ended slots being of unequal lengths, each having upwardly and forwardly inclined confronting edges, the shorter of said open ended slots being located between said needle apery ture and the longer of said open ended slots; and means for connecting the end of said plate portion remote from said open ended slots to said presser foot bar.

A blind stitching attachment for sewing machines having a presser foot bar comprising a presser foot having a fiat elongate plate portion, said plate portion having a needle aperture extending therethrough and a pair of open ended parallel slots extending transversely from one side edge of the plate portion, said open ended slots being of unequal lengths, the shorter of said open ended slots being located between said needle aperture and the longer of said open ended slots: said plate portion having parallel opposed upwardly inclined surfaces defining opposite transverse sides of each of said open ended slots.

4. A blind stitching attachment for sewing machines having a presser foot bar comprising a presser foot having a flat elongate plate portion, said plate portion having a v needle aperture extending therethrough and a pair of open ended parallel slots extending transversely from one side edge of the plate portion, said open ended slots being of unequal lengths, the shorter of said open ended slots being located between said needle aperture and the longer of said open ended slots; said plate portion having parallel opposed upwardly inclined surfaces defining opposite transverse sides of each of said open ended slots, said inclined sides extending upwardly away from said needle slot; and means for connecting the end of said plate portion remote from said open ended slots to said presser foot bar.

A blind stitching attachment for sewing machines having a presser foot bar comprising a presser foot having a flat elongate plate portion, provided with an upturned edge defining a fiange, saidY plate portion having a needle aperture extending therethrough and a pair of open ended parallel slots extending transversely from one side edge of the plate portion opposite said flange, said open ended slots being of unequal lengths, each having its confronting edges inclined upwardly and forwardly, the shorter of said open ended slots being located between said needle aperture and the longer of said open ended slots; and means for connecting the end of said plate portion remote from said open ended slots to said presser foot bar; said means including an upwardly extending flange on said end of said plate portion, an adaptor having an upper end detachably secured to said presser foot bar, and means connecting the lower end of said adaptor to said ange, said connecting means providing transverse adjustment of said plate portion relative to said adaptor.

A blind stitching attachment for sewing machines having a presser foot bar comprising a presser foot having a flat elongate plate portion, said plate portion having a needle aperture extending therethrough and a pair of open ended parallel slots extending transversely from one side edge of the plate portion, said open ended slots being of unequal lengths, the shorter of said open ended slots being located between said needle aperture and the longer of said open ended slots; said plate portion having parallel opposed upwardly inclined surfaces defining opposite transverse sides of each of said open ended slots, said inclined sides extending upwardly away from said needle slot; and means for connecting the end of said plate portion remote from said open ended slots to said presser foot bar; said means including an upwardly extending flange on said end of said plate portion, an adaptor having an upper end detachably secured to said presser foot bar, and means connecting the lower end of said adaptor to said ange, said connecting means providing transverse adjustment of said plate portion relative to said adaptor.

A blind stitching attachment for sewing machines having a presser foot bar comprising a presser foot having a'at elongate plate portion, said plate portion having a needle aperture extending therethrough and a pair of open ended parallel slots extending transversely from one side edge of the plate portion, said open ended slots being of unequal lengths, the shorter of said open ended slots being located between said needle aperture and the longer of said open ended slots; said plate portion having parallel opposed upwardly inclined surfaces defining opposite transverse sides of each of said open ended slots, said inclined sides extending upwardly away from said needle slot; and means for connecting said presser foot to said presser foot bar; and a side flange extending upwardly from the side of said fiat portion opposite said one side edge.

A blind stitching attachment for sewing machines having a presser foot bar comprising a presser foot having a at elongate plate portion, said plate portion having a needle aperture extending therethrough and a pair of open ended parallel slots extending transversely from one side edge of the plate portion, said open ended slots being of unequal lengths, the shorter of said open ended slots being located between said needle aperture and the longer of said open ended slots; said plate portion having parallel opposed upwardly inclined surfaces defining opposite transverse sides of each of said open ended slots, said inclined sides extending upwardly away from said needle slot; and means for connecting the end of said plate portion remote from said open ended slots to said presser foot bar; and a side flange extending upwardly from the side of said flat portion opposite said one side edge.
