Abstract

A photographic material comprising a paper support and a pigment layer applied thereto is characterized in that the pigment layer is formed from a suspension of a pigment in an aqueous solution containing (a) an alkali or ammonium salt of casein or of soybeam protein and (b) an oxidized polysaccharide or a water-soluble derivative of an oxidized polysaccharide. Component (b) may be present in amount from 0.5 to 50% by weight relative to the amount of component (a). The oxidized polysaccharide may be starch, dialdehyde starch or dialdehyde amylopectin, carboxymethyl cellulose, methyl cellulose, alginic and pectic acids and salts thereof, gum arabic and xylan, and may be obtained by oxidation into aldehyde groups of 50 to 100% of the secondary alcohol groups of the polysaccharide. One or more light-sensitive layers e.g. a silver halide emulsion layer, may be applied to the pigment layer. The photographic material may be useful for application of the silver complex diffusion transfer process, and development nuclei or substance for forming such nuclei may be present in the pigment layer or in a layer applied thereto, or for electrophotography and a photoconductive pigment or substance may be present in the pigment layer or in a layer applied thereto. Borium sulphate and titanium dioxide are specified as suitable photographically inert pigments. The pigment suspension may be applied by means of an air knife, brushes or other spreader.
