Abstract
1,039,910. Indirectly-heated cathodes. COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE THOMSON-HOUSTON. June 21, 1963 [June 29, 1962], No. 24782/63. Heading H1D. [Also in Division H5] A cathode heater 10 is embedded in a refractory insulating material 9 by the Schoop process, i.e. spraying with droplets of molten material, and is assembled with a cathode 1 but is not fixed to its inner walls. During manufacture, a layer of magnesium oxide or aluminium oxide may be deposited by the Schoop process on the convex surface of a stainless steel mandrel, a spiral heater is laid thereon and further insulating material is deposited until the heater is embedded in a mass of insulating material having an undulating outer convex surface, and a smooth concave surface which conforms to the under-surface of cathode 1. As shown, two concave screens 7, 8 having a smaller curvature than cathode base 1, are arranged behind the heater, screen 8 only contacting insulating mass 9 over a small area. The insulated heater is held in contact with cathode 1 by central stem 6 and by insulated leads 11, 12 secured to a plate 5, from which cathode 1 is supported by feet 4. The invention may also be applied to cylindrical cathodes.
