Abstract

[Also in Division B4] A piston rod 17 connected to a pair of ganged pistons 13, 14 is arranged to operate e.g. a rock drill and is oscillated by pulsating hydraulic pressure acting on the surface 16 of the piston 14 in a chamber 12 and by liquid contained in a chamber 21 variable by movement of the piston 13 and connected by a pipe 22 having an accumulator 24 and a stop valve 23 to the chamber 12, the arrangement being such that opening of the valve 23 balances the pressure in chambers 12 and 21 to stop the oscillation of the pistons 12, 13. In normal operation the valve 23 is closed and the liquid in the chamber 21 passes through an adjustable needle valve 25 into and out of the accumulator 24. In an alternative construction the stop valve 23 is replaced by a valve having two positions one freely interconnecting the chambers 12, 21 and the other interconnecting the chambers through a narrow tube or other fixed restrictor.
