[Also in Division Fl] A fluctuating pressure sonic power system comprises an hydraulic generator 2 for producing fluctuating pressures through a flexible pipe 3 to a percussive tool having an oscillating piston 7 and a return spring 9, the ratio of the frequency of the fluctuating pressures, during operation of the system, to the natural frequency of oscillation of the piston and spring is arranged to be between 1.3 and 1.5. The generator 2 is driven by a prime mover 1 and delivers fluctuating pressures via a capacity 4, valve 5 and pipe 3 to the tool. The piston 7 may be returned by liquid pressure instead of by a spring.
