Abstract
1,178,102. Percussive tool. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 21 June, 1967 [15 April, 1966], No. 16743/66. Heading B4C. [Also in Division F1] A piston 11 carrying a member 20 for driving a load 22, e.g. a rock drill 22 or an earth scoop (not shown) is freely mounted in a housing 10 and has one face 12 disposed within a housing chamber 14 subjected to hydraulic pressure pulses induced by a cam driven plunger 17 and has its other face 13 within an oil-filled chamber 15 which latter is connected to chamber 14 through a pressure balancing duct 25 when a housing port 26 is uncovered by the piston 11 as the latter passes a predetermined position in the housing. The chamber 14 is connected to the plunger 17 by a conduit 16 of length equal to one half-wavelength of the pulses therein and the conduit is connected to a matching accumulator reservoir 18. In operation and with the piston 11 being in its extreme right hand position thus uncovering port 26, pressure is built up in chamber 15 until the piston assumes its equilibrium mean position in which it covers port 26 and executes normal oscillations. The latter are arrested when port 26 is uncovered. A cage 23 retains the rock drill 22. The duct 25 may include a throttle valve (not shown) and a housing space 19 between piston faces 12, 13 receives leakage fluid.
