Abstract

<PICT:1038088/C6-C7/1> In apparatus for heat-treating sheet or strip material 1 Fig. 1 by supplying heated air or gas above and below the material, and which gas supports the material out of contact with ducting surfaces &c., the exhaust gas or the heat therefrom is recirculated. The apparatus is particularly adapted for use in annealing aluminium sheet and drying painted sheet material, the exhaust gases being recirculated directly Fig. 6 (not shown) or passed to a heat exchanger 14 Fig. 7 (not shown). The apparatus may be followed by a cooling stage of similar construction. The heating medium is supplied from ducts 2, 16 through apertures 3, 17 and the sheets 1 may be fed by a pair of endless bands 10 carrying studs 7 for engagement with the trailing edges. Alternatively the apparatus may be tilted for gravity feeding. In a modification the lower duct 2 Fig. 5 (not shown) may have a single longitudinal slot 6, the escape of gas being restricted by side walls 5 adjustably mounted adjacent the side edges of the sheet. Flow restricting end walls 11 Fig. 5 (not shown) may also be mounted across the conveyer bands 10.
