Abstract
Nickel plating baths consisting of nickel sulphate, nickel chloride or sodium chloride and boric acid include 4 additives (a) a depilting agent comprising a wetting agent (b) a stress reliever comprising saccharin or a derivative thereof (c) a brightener comprising an aryl sulphonate or sulphonamide and (d) a brightener containing n-or iso-butylaldehyde ring:- equal parts of these two compounds; either of them and chloral hydrate, 2-butyne 1:4 diol, nicotinamide or iso-nicotinamide. Optional additions include coumarin, 4-hydroxycoumarin, 6-methyl coumarin, formaldehyde, formic acid, succinonitrile, acrylonitrile, cysteine hydrochloride. E.D.T.A. may be present to complex metal ion contaminants, and sulphinates or sulphones to prevent darkening of the plate. The plating is applied at up to 80 A.S.F., pH 3.8 to 4.5 and at 125 DEG to 135 DEG F.
