Abstract
Hydrocarbon feedstocks boiling above the gasoline range, free of nitrogen and containing at least 20% by volume of aromatics are hydrocracked at 400-2500 p.s.i.g., and 400-750 DEG F. in the presence of a catalyst containing a Group 8 noble metal and in the presence of hydrogen sulphide; in one variant there is present more than 0-01 (preferably more than 0.2) millimoles of hydrogen sulphide per mole of hydrogen to produce a relatively aromatic gasoline and in another less than 0-2 millimoles per mole to produce a relatively non-aromatic jet or diesel fuel and the concentration may be varied from time to time according to the product desired. The feed should contain less than 50 p.p.m. of nitrogen but may contain sulphur. The LHSV may be 0-5-10 and 500-20,000 SCF/B of hydrogen are used. The metal catalyst may be supported on silica composites or molecular sieves.
