Abstract

Residual fuel oils having a gravity below 20 DEG A.P.I. and a sulphur content above 2% are improved by catalytic hydrodesulphurization at below 140 kg./cm.2g., 371-454 DEG C. and 0.2-10 v./v./hr. chosen to yield a residual product free from furnace oil and lighter products which has a pentane-insolubles content no higher than the feed and subjecting the product to a visbreaking which forms less than 20% vol. gasoline based on total products. Visbreaking may be effected at 427-538 DEG C., 3.5-70 kg./cm.2g., with a coil volume of 214-890 c.c. above 400 DEG C. per 100 litres of throughput per 24 hour day, preferably after removal of furnace oil and lighter boiling materials. Some lower boiling materials may be left in the visbroken product depending on the viscosity requirements.
