Abstract

1,037,228. Lubricating pistons. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. July 17, 1964 [July 17, 1963], No. 28264/63. Headings F2A and F2T. In a diesel engine cylinder lubricant is injected through a conduit 6 in the piston 1 to a piston ring groove 4b, the injecting means being operated by movement of the piston. A non- return valve 5 mounted on the underside of the piston is connected by the conduit 6, to the groove 4b and comprises a spring-loaded ball 11, Fig. 2 (not shown), and a seat 12 having a part-spherical seating 12a which, when the piston is at the bottom of its stroke, actuates an injector 7 to thereby inject lubricant into the groove 4b. The conduit 6 passes through the piston coolant chamber 32. The injector 7, Fig. 3 (not shown), is mounted on the scavenge chamber base 8 and is connected to a lubricant source by a conduit 10. The amount of lubricant injected may be metered and two or more injectors may be used to inject lubricant into a single groove or into more than one groove.
