Abstract

Foamed polyurethanes are reacted with solutions of alkalies, particularly sodium or potassium hydroxide, in anhydrous alcohols having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, particularly methanol or ethanol, until there is a reduction of 10 to 70% of the original weight of the foamed polyurethane and the excess of alkali is neutralized, e.g. by immersion in a bath of aqueous acetic, phosphoric or formic acid.
