Abstract

4-Cyano-2, 2-dimethyl butyraldehyde is made by reacting 1 mol isobutyraldol with at least 2 moles of acrylonitrile, preferably between 2 to 4 moles at 50 to 95 DEG C. in the presence of catalytic quantities of alkali-metal hydroxinoles, i.e. 1/10 to 1/500 of a mole per mole of isobutyraldol. The alkali-metal hydroxide is preferably employed as a 40 to 70% by weight aqueous solution. Examples illustrate the use of aqueous sodium and potassium hydroxide. The prior act refers to U.S.A. Specification 2,409,086 and French Specification 886,846.
